ABET INC. is recognized worldwide as a leader in engineering academic accreditation and is the only organization in the United States authorized to accredit engineering and computing programs. This is important for recruiting efforts as the USNA competes with nationally and internationally recognized Engineering Programs for the most qualified applicants.
Additionally, without ABET accreditation the USNA midshipmen in the Engineering School will not be allowed to sit for the fundamentals of Engineering Exam, which is the first step in the process of professional registration. In conclusion, ABET Accreditation provides the backbone for the USNA's assessment of the engineering and computing programs, providing for continuous quality improvement.
Source Selection Information ABET is the sole provider of program accreditation recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and U.S. Department of Education for the engineering and computing programs offered at USNA. Program accreditation provides assurance of quality and is required for midshipmen to be able to sit for licensing exams that are often required for federal employment as an engineer.
