GENERAL INFORMATION

  1. Title: Synthesis of Cyclopentane Monomers, SAMT-247, and Preclinical Studies
  2. Background Information: The mission of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) is to conduct and support biomedical research, research training, and the development of scientists, as well as to disseminate science-based research findings related to diabetes and metabolic diseases; digestive diseases and obesity; and infectious and immunologic diseases in order to improve people’s health and quality of life.

As part of its statutorily mandated functions, the NIDDK conducts and supports a broad range of biomedical research through both intramural research performed within NIH laboratories and extramural research supported through grants to universities and medical research institutions nationwide. In addition, the NIDDK supports research training programs for students and scientists at various stages of their careers and conducts education and outreach activities to provide science-based information to patients and their families, health care professionals, and the public.

Within the Laboratory of Bioorganic Chemistry at NIDDK, the Synthetic Bioactive Molecules Section (SBMS) requires studies to synthesize and evaluate several optimized molecules with potential anti-cancer and anti- Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) activity.
