The Department of Commerce through NOAA/ONMS is in the final stages of designating Chumash Heritage national marine sanctuary (CHNMS). The new sanctuary will span approximately 135 miles of coast and nearly 6,000 square miles in San Luis Obispo County to the Gaviota coast in Santa Barbara County, making it one of the largest national marine sanctuaries.
ONMS requires a new administrative headquarters for CHNMS to complete the designation process and begin initial operations which will include administrative, regulatory, research, education, outreach, and tribal engagement activities. In addition to hosting permanent Federal employees, contractors/affiliates, graduate students and other interns there is a need to store a significant amount of mobile education and outreach signage, displays, and equipment. NOAA's space requirement is for approximtely 1,200 square feet of office and related space within the following delineated area: Within San Luis Obispo County bounded by:
