The Naval Ophthalmic Readiness Activity Detachment Yorktown has a requirement for a fully automated optical fabrication system. The system shall be designed as a complete solution package for conventional and digital lens surfacing from lens blank to prescription finished product. The system shall accommodate high volume precision ophthalmic lens surfacing and shall be designed as a complete and fully automated system from process start to process completion.

The system shall consist of the following automated sub systems. - Lens stock blank De-boxing system - Lens Blocking system (Auto and Manual) - Lens De-blocking system (Auto and Manual) - Lens Generating system - Lens Soft Polishing system - Lens Engraving/Marking system - Lens Washing system - Lens Hard Coating system - Fluid Management system with Micro Separator - Conveyor with incorporated Tray Management System and accommodations for additional Generating and Edging systems The sub-system's lens cutting and polishing machinery shall have the capabilities to accommodate the following working ranges required by a prescription: Lens generation Concave: milling up to a minus (-)14.5 diopter/turning up to a minus (-)30 diopters Convex: milling and turning up to a plus (+) 30 diopters Lens Soft polishing Concave: accommodate a base curve of 0 to minus (-)18 diopters Cylinder: accommodate 0 to plus (+) 6 diopters Accommodate any material lens blank in sizes of 48mm to 85mm The sub-system's blocking machinery shall use a non-hazardous adhesive to attach a block to the lenses.

The sub-system's engraving system shall not use excimer technology due to associated costs and maintenance. The sub-system's hard coating system shall utilize preferred spin coating technology.
