Monthly Biohazard Waste Pick-ups

Provide for the purchase of monthly biohazard waste pick-ups. The period of performance is for a base period of 12 months (13 stops) followed by two 12-month option renewal periods for a total of 36 months. Three hundred (300) annual containers are included - for Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio (NAMRU-SA). This will support NAMRU-SA research projects with marginal disruption. Answer: Electronically by email 2. What is the approximate number of boxes to be picked-up/month.

Answer: Fifteen 3. Is there only one pick-up locaton?

Answer: Yes 4. Are you using the standard medical waste disposal containers or are you using larger containers?

Answer: We use 28-gallon plastic tubs and cardboard boxes. 5. Is there a list of Medical Waste that is to be collected or any historical data on what has been collected in the past?

Answer: -Animal waste from animals intentionally exposed to pathogens -Bulk animal or human blood and blood products -Microbiological/pathological waste -Sharps 6. Please provide an estimate of the percentage of waste that is pathological (and therefore must be incinerated) and the amount of waste normal regulated medical waste.

Answer: Probably about ~20 %. That’s a high estimate. Most waste will be sharps. Well, we don’t keep track of what goes in what box/tub. Sharps may be mixed with waste. There are 4 different departments that use biomedical waste containers and it’s a little hard to keep track of what type of biohazardous waste goes into what container. Oh goodness, that’s a tough question. We don’t monitor the contents. Everyone is trained on what goes into biohazard but like I stated we don’t monitor the contents.

We fit what we can and not exceed 40 lbs. We will mix sharps and biohazard but in most cases blood/fluids will go into one box/tub. 7. Please confirm if it is practically possible to segregate the pathological and animal waste?

Answer: It is not possible to separate the waste.
