Description
As published on SAM.gov.
Douglas-fir bark beetles affected over 21,000 acres within R2 in 2024. In an ongoing effort to protect high value Douglas fir trees and stands in R2, forests in consultation with forest health protection utilize a cost-effective, anti-aggregation pheromone, methylcyclohexanone (MCH), with great success each year. MCH is a very affordable, highly effective, low toxicity substance and does not harm humans or forest resources.
MCH prevents tree mortality and reduces the risk associated with the development of hazardous trees. In addition to protecting trees in developed areas, MCH will also be utilized by forests to protect individual seed trees and legacy Douglas-fir trees from mortality within harvest units. The benefits of MCH treatments include reducing costs associated with mitigating dead and dying trees, increasing safety, reducing fuels, and safeguarding the ecological benefits provided by protecting seed trees.
