According to a study performed by the United States Air Force (USAF) school of Aerospace Medicine, neck pain is a significant factor impacting fighter pilot performance and quality of life, and rates of injury have increased over the years. The OHWS initiative is designed to improve quality of life and readiness by decreasing injury rates, most notably for the high rate of spine injuries incurred by fighter pilots. OHWS is designed to meet the unique physical needs of fighter pilots. Fitness and conditioning is accomplished through a comprehensive, coordinated, multidisciplinary physical training program focused on the movement and strengthening of the spinal musculoskeletal system.
