To continue producing accurate output-based price indexes for automobile and motor vehicle insurance, the Producer Price Index (PPI) must purchase access to symbol group data used by auto insurance companies. This data is not available from public sector sources. This data is required to calculate mission critical producer price index. The BLS/OPLC supplements the auto and motor vehicle indexes with symbol group data to calculate the dollar value associated with the change in risk as autos move from one symbol group to another, which is the information required for quality adjustment.
