Utah State University (CAGE: 4B969) 1000 Old Main Hl Logan, Utah 84322, US, has provided research, development, and production of biomaterial protein and fiber under previous contracts with NSWC PCD. The Government anticipates the award of a five year requirements contract that includes a base year and four options. Under contract FA8075-14-D-0014, USU successfully synthesized and delivered synthetic hagfish slime proteins, synthetic hagfish intermediate filament fiber, synthetic spider silk, and synthetic spider silk-based sponges for propeller occlusion under Maritime Vessel Stopping Occlusion technologies (MVSOT). Consequently, the U.S. Navy established contract N61331-20-D-0001, which allowed USU to investigate multiple constructs and characterized the mechanical properties to identify the best performance of the synthetic slime including the analysis on deployable shape requirements for recombinant sponges for MVSOT. Additionally, transgenic silkworm fibers were characterized and optimized through controlled offspring generation.
