The Physics Building was constructed in 1962 and much of the electrical system, original to the building, is beyond its useful life. These systems are also not compliant with current building codes, contain hazardous materials and need complete upgrades. The existing protective devices may not operate as specified, increasing the potential for arc-flash hazards and system damaging electrical faults. Repairs are cost prohibitive and may lead to extended unplanned outages in this mission critical facility.

The new substation will be constructed in the north-loading dock parking lot, complete with new transformer and switchgear pads, grounding and crushed stone. Long lead electrical equipment procurements are planned early in the project and construction of the substation infrastructure can be completed in parallel. Once the cutovers are completed the old transformers and oil switch will be removed from the equipment vault in the basement of Building 510. The Contractor shall not procure the switchgear or transformers under this contract.
