The Air Traffic Control Specialist (or more simply, controller) position is one of FAA’s Mission Critical Occupations (MCOs). It is also our largest single job category with nearly 15,000 controllers serving nationwide. It is essential that FAA maintain the highest standards to identify, screen, assess, and select the best controller applicants. Toward that end, the FAA uses the Air Traffic Skills Assessment (ATSA), a pre-employment selection test battery, to identify candidates who have the highest probability of succeeding as air traffic controllers.
