## Description

STATEMENT OF NEED Vanquish Horizon/Flex Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatograph GENERAL: James A. Haley Veterans Hospital Research and Development Services, 13000 Bruce B. Downs Blvd, Tampa, FL 33612. Thermo Scientific Vanquish Horizon/Flex Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatograph system (UPLC). This Brand Name Only requirement for the Thermo-Fisher Vanquish UPLC will be used for lipidomics, metabolomics, proteomics, and stable isotope tracing to identify new treatments for Alzheimer s disease.

**BACKGROUND:** The Roskamp Institute, mass spectrometry team conducts research in neurological illnesses including Alzheimer s disease (AD) for its prevention and treatment in veterans carrying the genetic risk factor APOE 4 (involved in lipid transport) as they represent an at-risk population for AD especially after having sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury and/or developed Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. The consequences of traumatic brain injury (TBI) can lead to stroke and other neuroglial diseases are highly prevalent in the Veteran population.

**PURPOSE:** The equipment will enhance the ability of the researcher to increase the number of samples that can be processed at once through its ability to deliver optimal chromatographic separation of the lipid analytes at ultrahigh speed. The Thermo Scientific Vanquish Horizon/Flex UPLC pumps allow for precise flow which reduces retention time drift which is important for lipidomics experiments.

**SCOPE:** James A. Haley is requesting the Vanquish Horizon/Flex UHPLC (Brand Name Only) to preform lipidomic, proteomic, metabolomic, and stable isotope analysis via mass spectrometry.
