For background knowledge, Urology had an end-of-life BK ultrasound machine that became obsolete in 2012. In 2014 the facility purchased a BK ultrasound machine, the BK Flex-focus, to be use in the procedure room and operating room to do prostate biopsies. These ultrasound machines use probes with a disposable plastic/metal needle guide. The prior ultrasound machine had 5 probes (8808) that still integrated with the Flex-focus in addition to the one additional 2014-new probe (8808e) that was purchased and disposables. On September 16, 2024, a GE sales rep, contacted the surgery team to state that BK (acquired by GE), discontinued production of the disposable biopsy guide (UA-1257S17E) which fits onto the current 8808 probes. Without this product, the probes cannot be used for procedures. Leaving the department with only 1 remaining probe 8808e, which was purchased in 2014 with the Flex-focus, to be used for prostate biopsies.
