As we seek to support White House directives to leverage the 250th anniversary of American independence to promote American excellence and position the U.S. as the partner of choice amid global competition, Morocco holds a unique status as the first country to recognize U.S. independence. The Tangier American Legation is a unique physical embodiment of this history and is a core part of the Mission strategy to carry out the Administration's policy objectives. The Legation is the oldest U.S. diplomatic facility in the world and the only property on the U.S. register of historic places that is located overseas. This makes it a uniquely appropriate venue for Mission activities within the America250 campaign.
