Please submit a capability statement in processing salmon liver samples using the MMPB method-( The chemical known as MMPB, 3-methoxy-2-methyl-4-phenylbutyric acid, is an oxidation product of microcystin, which is typically produced through ozonolysis (Harada etal., 1996) or Lemieux oxidation (Sano etal., 1992). The USGS Columbia River Research Laboratory in Cook, WA requires the MMPB method for analyzing juvenile fall Chinook salmon liver samples. The USGS has long-term monitoring projects in place on the Snake River to estimate abundance, survival, and growth of juvenile fall Chinook salmon migrating through Lower Granite Reservoir. As part of this monitoring, the USGS is investigating if harmful algae blooms can have any health effects on the ESA listed juvenile fall Chinook salmon in the reservoir. The USGS has chosen to utilize the MMPB method for analyzing fish liver tissue over the ELISA method, due to the fact that the MMPB method can detect both bound and unbound toxins in the tissue, while the ELISA method can only detect bound toxins.
