NIST is seeking information from sources that may be capable of providing a commercial item solution that meets or exceeds the following draft minimum specifications. The required item is a superconducting magnet with a room temperature bore, which will be used in our laboratory, that produces a sufficiently large magnetic field to saturate high perpendicular anisotropy samples relevant to chipmakers in the sample plane. This allows for measurements of wavelike magnetic excitations by in-elastic light scattering. These measurements will enable NIST then allow to determine the “Heisenberg exchange”., which will enable NIST together with chipmakers to This will allow NIST together with Chipmakers to improve models to significantly accelerate the magnetic device development process. ) Magnetic Field Characteristics Maximum magnetic field shall be equal to 5 Tesla or exceed 5 Tesla. Magnets with larger magnetic field either standard or optional will be given preference. The magnetic field shall be orientated horizontally. The magnetic field shall be parallel to the room temperature bore. Field uniformity over a 5 mm diameter spherical volume: ) Total maximum magnetic field change within the spherical volume shall be smaller than 0.5 mT at any magnetic field between zero and 5 Tesla. Magnets with better field uniformity will be given preference. ) Location of the center of the spherical volume shall be specified with an uncertainty smaller than 1 mm radially and axially with respect to a reference point on the bore of the magnet. ) The location of the center of the spherical volume shall be radially less than plus/minus 3 mm away from the geometric center of the bore with 150 mm diameter, plus/minus 4 mm away from the geometric center of the bore with larger than 160 mm diameter and plus/minus 5 mm away from the geometric center of the bore with larger than 165 mm diameter. Magnets with the location of the center of the spherical volume closer to the geometrical center will be given preference. The magnetic field compensation shall be such that the stray field at any field of the magnet between zero and 5 Tesla fulfills the requirements below: ) The radial magnetic stray field shall be at 225 cm from the center of magnet bore less than 0.5 mT, while the maximum magnetic field inside the room temperature bore is between zero and 5 Tesla. Magnets, which meet the stray field requirement at a smaller distance will be given preference. ) The magnetic stray field shall be axially at 295 cm from the front face away from the magnet less than 0.5 mT, while the maximum magnetic field inside the room temperature bore is between zero and 5 Tesla. The front face of the magnet shall be the side without any possible cold head. Magnets, which meet the stray field requirement at a smaller distance will be given preference. ) The magnetic stray field shall be axially at 315 cm from the front face through the magnet less than 0.5 mT while the maximum magnetic field inside the room temperature bore is between zero and 5 Tesla. Magnets, which meet the stray field requirement at a smaller distance will be given preference. The maximum magnetic field of 5 Tesla shall be reached from a start field of zero Tesla in less than 90 minutes. ) Magnet Dimensions Room temperature bore of the magnet shall have a diameter equal to or exceeding 150 mm. Magnets with larger diameter room temperature bore will be given preference. The full diameter of the bore shall be accessible from both sides of the magnet. The diameter of the magnet including support structure shall be less than 135 cm. The magnet without cryo-head and support structure shall be shorter than 140 cm. The center of the bore shall be 110 cm above the floor. The magnet with its support structure needs to fit through fit through the entrance door of the laboratory, which is 166 cm wide and 208 cm high, while being loaded on a pallet jack or similar means to move the magnet. Support structure for magnet Magnet support structure shall have a customer specified hole pattern at the bottom for mounting on linear guide carriages. Magnet and connections shall be able to translate along linear rails up to 2/3rds of the magnet depth without breaking connections. Misc The superconducting magnet shall be cooled with a closed-cycle system using a pulse tube. Cryo-cooler lines shall be longer than 18 m. Power supply for magnet shall be included and remotely controlled via analog voltage, USB, ethernet or GPIB. All required control software for operation of the magnet shall be included. All required temperature monitoring systems shall be included. Optional Criteria Higher Magnetic Field: Magnet shall produce a magnetic field exceeding 5 Tesla. Magnets with larger magnetic field, higher field uniformity at larger magnetic fields and smaller stray fields at larger magnetic fields will be given preference. Extended warranty/service beyond base for 3 years on the complete magnet system including cryo-cooler beyond base. Preference will be given for longer warranty/service. 6. Question-set 1: Cryostat support structure We request NIST provides: a sketch/drawing of the linear guide carriages with indicative dimensions Govt Response: The exact dimensions of the carriages will be decided after award in discussion with the vendor. confirmation of the anticipated acceleration / velocity of the guide carriage when moving the carriage Govt Response: The magnet will be moved manually at low speed, similar to a sliding door in a de-energized state, as such there is no exact acceleration/velocity. confirmation whether the magnet will be energised or de-energised during movement on the carriage Govt Response: The magnet will be de-energized during movement. what ferromagnetic materials are in close proximity to the magnet so we can ensure the magnet and magnet-support structure can withstand external forces Govt Response: The magnet will be in close proximity to an optical table with mounting hardware for optical components. confirmation the carriage will be securely locked in position after movement Govt Response: There will be end stops on the rails. Ideally one or more locking screws will be part of the support structure. Question-set 2: Options to assist NIST assessment The SOW appears to indicate exceeding several requirements will be looked upon favourably. To avoid an excessive number of options being generated, please confirm: the core limiting constraints (e.g. external dimension, mass, time to ramp to operating field) Govt Response: The government has specified minimum ramp rate and maximum external dimensions and all other limiting constraints.
